A safe place should be one in which you feel relaxed, comfortable, and unafraid. The smells, sights, sounds, feelings, and location of this place are what make it secure and comforting. If you can't think of a safe place in the real world, try to imagine one! If you can think of a safe place, imagine how you could make it feel even safer.
Click on the options below to begin picturing your safe place...
Close your eyes and picture every detail of your safest most comfortable place. You may think about a fort surrounded by tall fences and a moat, or imagine lying on a private beach in the sunshine. Imagine the sights, sounds, smells, and feelings in that place. Try to think of things that bring you comfort and security. You can design it any way you like…
You can draw or paint it, cut out of magazines and make a collage, or simply write out words that make you feel safe. Putting your safe place on paper can be very helpful to your healing process as you begin to move forward. Involve a friend or loved one in this project if you wish, and don't forget to hang it up where you can see it when you're done!
Once you have a safe place in mind, you can go there whenever you feel worried or afraid. It is usually easier to imagine a safe place when you are feeling relaxed… Visit the Relaxation Station section of this site to learn more about relaxing.
