Physical Pain, Tension, or Discomfort

When under stress, like after a trauma, your body chemistry changes.  These changes can cause you to think, feel, and act differently.  Your mind races… you feel anxious…  We all know the feeling...

But did you know that stress can affect your physical body too?

Because your body chemistry changes during stressful times, it is actually common to have bodily symptoms that you may not have even realized were related to your being stressed out…  For example, you may think the colds you keep getting are because it’s winter time…  Think again, stress can actually lower your immune system making it difficult for your body to fight illness so you are more likely to get sick!

The list below is not the full range of possible symptoms, but the point is to keep in mind that if you are dealing with unusual bodily symptoms, it may be a result of the stress caused by trauma.

IMPORTANT:  Always talk to a doctor or counselor if physical symptoms persist.

  • Changes in Appetite
  • Acne breakouts
  • Digestive Issues (e.g., nausea, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, etc.)
  • Pain or tension in your back, neck, or shoulders
  • Feeling tired or exhausted (especially when you’ve had enough sleep)
  • Headaches, tension headaches, or migraines
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Getting sick more often
