What’s the point of sleeping?
Getting plenty of good sleep is so important to your recovery process. When you go to sleep for the night, your body uses this time to:
- Repair cells and replenish after your daily activities
- Release growth hormones which help to build bones, tissues, and red blood cells
- Strengthen your immune system so you can stay healthy
- Secure what you have learned throughout the day in the brain
How much should I be getting?
In the teen years, it is best to get 9 to 10 hours of sleep per night, but studies show that most young people only get about 6 to 7 hours. If you don’t get enough Z’s you will probably begin to see signs of sleep deprivation such as:
- Falling asleep in class
- Crankiness
- Difficulty waking up in the morning
- Trouble staying focused
- Grades slipping
- Feeling depressed (after prolonged sleep deprivation)
