What’s the point of sleeping?

Getting plenty of good sleep is so important to your recovery process. When you go to sleep for the night, your body uses this time to:

  • Repair cells and replenish after your daily activities
  • Release growth hormones which help to build bones, tissues, and red blood cells
  • Strengthen your immune system so you can stay healthy
  • Secure what you have learned throughout the day in the brain

How much should I be getting?

In the teen years, it is best to get 9 to 10 hours of sleep per night, but studies show that most young people only get about 6 to 7 hours. If you don’t get enough Z’s you will probably begin to see signs of sleep deprivation such as:

  • Falling asleep in class
  • Crankiness
  • Difficulty waking up in the morning
  • Trouble staying focused
  • Grades slipping
  • Feeling depressed (after prolonged sleep deprivation)
