What can I do about these memories? You can begin to heal by thinking about your experience… It is really hard to do, but over time it helps. When you remember what happened, try not to avoid thinking about it if you can. This will help you to “work it through” it, and soon the reactions you have to the memories will begin to fade. When you're ready, putting your memories on paper can help... Writing and artwork are great ways to express yourself in a safe way. Putting things on paper can be a huge relief and give you a better understanding of your feelings and the situation. A counselor can guide you through writing exercises or art therapy that may help. The human brain is designed to help you get through this… But sometimes, trauma can get “stuck” and the normal healing doesn’t work as well as it should. If you are having trouble dealing with daily life because of trauma memories and it’s been more than two months since the event, we suggest that you talk to a professional helper who can assist you with this. Check out the My Support section of this site to learn more about talking to a pro. Go back to the My Memories module to learn more. |
