How to Deal with Triggers

You can use the RID method to deal with trauma reminders and triggers!

R elax…or calm down. Working on your breathing or other relaxation techniques are very helpful here (check out the Relaxation Station for ideas)

I dentify the things that are triggering you

Decide how to deal with it. By deciding how you will react you are getting backsome control over your recovery.

Some tips for dealing with a trigger or trauma reminder:

  • Distract yourself with things you enjoy like listening to music, calling a friend, or focusing on something else for a few seconds.
  • Talk yourself through the situation… say stuff like “This will pass!” “I’m ok!” “I can get through this.”
