The Need to Feel Safe

We all need to feel safe, secure, and protected from harm… Dealing with trauma can cause people to lose their sense of safety in the world.  Even if you're no longer in danger, you may feel unsafe in situations that remind you of what happened, or perhaps you feel unsafe most of the time.

Safety can mean many different things depending on who you are and what you’ve been through. For some, safety may mean being completely protected from harm, for others, feeling safe may mean having a way to escape. Sometimes the best way to feel safe is to plan ahead in case danger arises.  Think about and answer the following questions for yourself:

  • What does it mean to be safe?
  • What are a few things I can do to feel safe?
  • Do I have a favorite place where I feel calm and safe? Where?

It is important for you to regain your sense of safety and control so you can heal and move forward without fear…
