Why Do People Tend to Isolate Themselves After a Trauma?

A lot of people pull away from others because they think:

  • No one else will get it!
  • Other people don’t want to hear about it
  • Other people don’t care
  • I don’t want to bother my friends and family by talking about it
  • I am too embarrassed or ashamed to bring it up

Thoughts like this are normal, but don’t let those ideas pull you away from your support network!

Some teens may truly feel alone, like there is no one out there who will listen or understand. If this is the case, know that there are people in your life who care. You just have to figure out who those people are! Sometimes friends and family members want to be there for you but do not know how to support you. The Who Can I Trust and Talking to Parents sections on this site may help. If you feel you cannot talk to friends or family, sometimes a school counselor, case worker, or someone else you look up to can help. Go to the Other Types of Help section of this site to learn more.

Think about one of your best friends or a close family member. Now put them in your place. What would you think about them? What would you like to do to help them? Would you be critical of them?
