Worried about how you're coping?

It is common to experience physical and emotional reactions after a traumatic event.

  • Feelings of intense fear or panic
  • Nightmares
  • Depression
  • Disturbing thoughts/images
  • Emotional numbness
  • Rapid heartbeat and heavy breathing
  • Physical pain
  • Headaches

Some reactions and sensations can cause concern and may seem very strange or upsetting if you have never dealt with them before. Just remember that these stress reactions are your body’s natural way of responding to intense stress.

Sometimes your body has a difficult time shutting off these stress responses and it remains in this state even after the danger is no longer present. You can visit the My Memories section of the site for more information about these common reactions.
